Colonial New Jersey was split into East and West Jersey roughly on a diagonal line from the North West to the South East. On the west side, the Quakers dominated as evidenced by the many Friends meeting houses distributed in the west, as well as some more unusual denominations like the Moravians that took advantage of the religious tolerance of the Quaker faith. In the East, the Presbyterian faith dominated, creating impressive churches, many from local materials including cedar and sandstone. |
