New Jersey’s coast has been important strategically since the days of the Indians who used it for summer fishing grounds, and also as a stopping point for trains, ferries and stagecoaches transporting passengers between New York and Philadelphia. Later the coast served as a vacation spot for Victorians taking in the new past time of bathing in the ocean, as well as those seeking space for summer religious camps. |
