New Jersey has an unusual relationship to its urban environments. Politically bullied by the cities of Philadelphia and New York, the cities of New Jersey were never allowed to develop into the size and stature of her neighbors. The landscape of New Jersey, once primarily agrarian, became mixed, and heavily urbanized in the corridor between the two cities. The tension between those commuting to the cities and those working in the farmland resulted in the fracturing of the political and physical landscape into many small towns. |
