The “Garden State” moniker hints at New Jersey’s agricultural importance as a major supplier of produce and dairy items not only to its own urban centers but also to the cities of New York and Philadelphia. In the north of the state fertile valleys were created by the erosion of ancient mountain ranges, while in the south, submersion under the primordial ocean created soils well suited for the growth of tomatoes and blueberries. |
